Blueberries and bilberries are related plants belonging to the Heather or Ericaceae family (Latin Ericaceae). Common to members of the Heather family is that these plants prefer acidic soils. Plants live in symbiosis with fungi that encircle plant roots and require an acidic environment to develop.

The extensive Heather family includes more than 100 genera. The genus Vaccinium (Latin Vaccinium) combines many vaccine plants with edible berries, such as common cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos), common lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), common blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), Caucasian blueberry (Vaccinium arctostaphylos), Vaccinium uliginosum), angustifolia blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), tall blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum).
All of these plants are closely related and therefore have a lot in common.

Common blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) and common blueberries (Vaccinium uliginosum) are most often confused.

The easiest way to tell the difference between these berries is to crush the berries with your fingers. A dark blue juice is released from the blueberries, which immediately stains the fingers. Hence the Russian name "blueberry", because the berries are dyed dark. By the way, blueberries are among the plants from which natural food coloring dark purple (E163).

Blueberry juice is practically transparent and does not stain fingers. In blueberries, only the rind is bluish-gray. Hence the Russian name - blueberry or blue berry.

Another clear difference between blueberries and blueberries is the stems. Blueberry stems do not woody, while blueberry shoots woody from bottom to top.

Tall blueberry

Recently, the so-called varietal, large-fruited or tall blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum), which are also called garden blueberries, have often appeared on the market. The tall blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is native to North America. At the beginning of the last century, this plant was introduced into cultivation and there are already a large number of varieties of this blueberry.

The berries of the tall blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) resemble those of the common blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), only much larger. There are many high yielding varieties with very large berries. Therefore, this type of plant is also called large-fruited or varietal blueberries. The plant itself is also very similar to the common blueberry. A distinctive feature of this species are very tall bushes, hence the other name - tall blueberries.

Caucasian blueberry

Another type of Vaccinium - Caucasian blueberry (Vaccinium arctostaphylos) - introduces some confusion between the names of blueberries or blueberries. This plant grows, as the name suggests, in the Caucasus. It grows high in mountain forests among deciduous trees and rhododendrons. Outwardly, the plant resembles tall blueberries - these are tall spreading bushes up to 2-2.5 meters. The berries of the Caucasian blueberry are globular (6-8 mm in diameter) and darker. Hence, for sure, this type of plant is called blueberry. However, the berries of the Caucasian Vaccinium, like blueberries, do not have coloring juice. Therefore, the plant could be called Caucasian blueberry.

The black berries of the Caucasian Vaccinium have long been sold in the central market of the city of Sochi under the name “blueberries”. In my childhood, my dad and I went to the mountains "to pick blueberries." Then for me blueberries were associated with trees on which black berries grow.

Perhaps this is why the term "garden blueberry" is sometimes used for cultivated varieties of American blueberry? After all, tall blueberries appeared in Europe and Russia relatively recently. Whereas tall blueberries have long been familiar, at least in the south of Russia.

I only wonder why the Caucasian blueberry (Vaccinium arctostaphylos) has not yet been introduced into the culture, like the tall blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum)?

Blue berry

The confusion with the names blueberry or blueberry still accompanies these plants when translated from other languages. So the plant, which in Russian is called blueberry, in many European languages ​​is called blue berry, or blueberry: blueberry (English), blåbær (Danish), German (Blaubeeren). The blue berry, which in Russian is called blueberry, in many European languages ​​is also called, like blueberry, blue berry or other names like bilberry (English), Heidelbeere (German), mosebøllebær (Danish).

The confusion with the names also arises because large-fruited or tall varietal blueberries in many European languages ​​are called blue berries: highbush blueberry (English), Amerikanske Blåbær (Danish), Amerikanische Blaubeere (German). And since blueberries are called blueberries, when the name of tall blueberries is translated into Russian, the name is obtained as tall or American blueberries.

Blueberries or blueberries - the difference is necessary

The confusion with the names has created a lot of confusion in Denmark. Blueberries and blueberries are very similar in appearance and these plants are often referred to similarly as blåbær (blueberries). For the time being, this name did not cause any particular problems.

The obvious need to name these plants differently arose relatively recently, when the berries of the common blueberry were included in the official register of poisonous plants in Denmark (Giftlinjen).

At the same time, the Danish Ministry of Food Industry banned the name and sale of blueberries and blueberries under the same name blåbær (blue berry). Now blueberries need to be called only as mosebøllebær (translated as “marsh berry”). And the blueberry is called blåbær (blue berry).

Rumors about the toxicity of common blueberry quickly spread in the media. At the same time, details were often not mentioned, which led to misunderstandings and changes in the meaning of the information. Some Danes began to perceive the common blueberry as a poisonous plant. And because of the great similarity with blueberries and the same name, some Danes began to classify blueberries as poisonous plants.

American blueberries or blueberries

The confusion with the names accompanies in Denmark and tall or large-fruited blueberries. This plant appeared in Denmark in the middle of the last century, which the Danes began to call blåbær (blueberry - translated from English).

In the last 10-15 years, large-fruited blueberries have begun to actively conquer the Danish market. The berry began to appear more and more often in shops, cafes, restaurants, and the name of the berries began to cause more and more misunderstanding among the Danes. Blåbær is called blueberry in Danish. Therefore, many Danes are convinced that large-fruited berries are cultivated varieties of common blueberries.

About ten years ago, reports began to appear in newspapers that large-fruited berries were illegally sold under the name, which buyers associate with common blueberries growing in the nature of Denmark. This issue was addressed by scientists from the University of Copenhagen and employees of the Ministry of Food Industry.

According to these authorities, tall blueberries should not be associated with blueberries in humans. It is two different kinds plants whose berries have a different composition. For example, common blueberries contain valuable anthocyanins in the pulp and peel. Berries of tall blueberries also contain anthocyanins, but only in the peel, therefore in smaller quantities.

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen believe that large-fruited blueberries are closer to common blueberries than to common blueberries. Therefore, it is more logical to call tall blueberries large-fruited or tall mosebøllebær (marsh berry, which is called blueberry). However, such a name would become too much in doubt due to the fact that the common blueberry (mosebøllebær) was included in the register of poisonous plants in Denmark.

On the other hand, the name “blueberry” (blåbær) is already firmly attached to the tall blueberry. Therefore, the Ministry Food Industry Denmark has decided to refer to this plant as American Blueberry (a plant originating in North America).

This is how the tall blueberry in Denmark was officially named Amerikanske Blåbær (American blueberry), but in reality it is sold simply under the name blåbær (blueberry).

Therefore, in Denmark, confusion will constantly accompany blueberries and blueberries.

Blueberries or blueberries - Latin names remove doubts

Recently, various berry plants from the genus Vaccinium are often sold in nurseries. Due to the external similarity and confusion with the names, it can be difficult to obtain the desired plant. The same plant, like tall blueberry, can be marketed under the names blueberries and blueberries, and to some extent both names are correct.

In addition, new species from the genus Vaccinium appear in the garden culture. For example, in horticulture, the cultivated narrow-leaved blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.), Which is native to Canada, is becoming popular.

The confusion with the names will surely continue when cultivated varieties of common blueberries appear on the market. The University of Aarhus is currently breeding blueberry varieties that will soon be available for sale.

The only way to avoid confusion is to navigate by the Latin (international, universal) plant names. This is the only way to avoid misunderstandings. Latin names remove doubts.

Blueberries and blueberries are very similar to each other. Both berries belong to the same Heather family. But there is a big difference between them both in the number of useful elements in the composition and in the main area of ​​application. Experienced gardeners can easily determine which of them grows in the forest or on the site, by their characteristic external signs and other characteristics. These include taste, color, smell and some other features.

Blueberries and blueberries - the external differences between bushes and berries

The first sign that distinguishes blueberries from blueberries is the height of the bush. Blueberries grow much higher, and in some areas their thickets reach up to 1.5-2 meters. The direction of their shoots is predominantly vertical. And blueberries are classified as creeping plants, the branches of which are inclined to the ground.

Another outward sign differences are the stems of the shrubs. In blueberries, they are strong, completely grinning, while in blueberry bush, both small and immature green shoots are observed. The foliage also has certain differences. In the first case, it is wider, with blunt edges, and in the second it takes on an ovoid, oval shape with pointed tops.

Blueberry berries are located on the branches pointwise and by the piece, and blueberries grow as if in bunches. The sizes also differ: blueberries are smaller and have a more rounded shape of the fruit, in contrast to the slightly elongated, pear-shaped blueberries.

The pulp of blueberries is always dark, as is the dark-gray color of the shell. Blueberries are characterized by a greenish tint of pulp and a beautiful, blue rind. The juice of the first berry is easily soiled, dark blue in color, it is often used as a natural dye. Blueberry juice is lighter and practically devoid of coloring properties.

There are also differences in taste: in blueberries it is sweeter and richer, while in blueberries it is more watery and sourish. The first berry is not classified as a cultivated plant species, it grows better in wild conditions, but from the second, breeding work is often carried out and is successfully grown in the garden or in summer cottages.

Composition and useful properties of blueberries

The berry contains a whole range of useful substances, including organic acids, vitamins C, B, A, beta-carotene, fiber, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, etc. This berry is classified as a low-calorie food, in 100 g of medium fruits there are only 60 calories.

Blueberries have a lot of medicinal properties... It is actively used in the prevention and treatment of visual impairment, and is added to the composition of the corresponding pharmaceutical preparations. Due to the high level of antioxidants and astringent qualities, the berry is used in the fight against diarrhea, intestinal infections, as well as as an anti-inflammatory and antitumor agent.

It is also known to be used in cosmetology - fresh pulp is added to the compositions of face masks. In addition to berries, the foliage of blueberry bushes is also rich in useful substances, decoctions from which help with colds and normalize the work of the circulatory system.

Composition and main properties of blueberries

Blueberries are 89% water. It has an equally useful complex of substances and is actively used in pharmacology and folk medicine... The berry is rich in B vitamins, carotides, potassium, phosphorus, fiber, etc.

Due to the presence of special anthocyanins, it is used for the prevention of oncological diseases, and pectins contribute to the elimination of various harmful substances from the body.

The properties of blueberries are also actively used in the treatment of varicose veins, since there are many useful vitamin P, which improves the elasticity of the vessel walls.

As in the case of blueberries, not only fruits are rich in vitamins, but also the green part of the plant. Decoctions are made from it, which are good for diarrhea and other problems with the intestines or stomach.

Features of growing blueberries in the garden

To grow a healthy and lush blueberry bush in the garden, it is necessary to create conditions for it that are as close as possible to a wild, forest environment. They are responsible for choosing a place for planting - the berry loves the sun, but it grows well in partial shade.

Before the procedure, dig a hole at least 50 cm deep and fertilize the soil with sulfur, phosphorus, and the remnants of conifers. Blueberries are propagated by seed or ready-made seedlings. They can be found in the forest, preference should be given to low, young and well-developed bushes, dig them out carefully, always with an earthen lump.

After that, the bush is placed in a dug hole, moistening the soil on the roots (which are straightened) with water. From above, they cover everything with soil mixed with fertilizers, lightly ram the area and water it abundantly. Additionally, you can close the plantings with mulching material from spruce branches or maple leaves.

Seeds are first stratified, then sown in a spacious pot or other container with a substrate. The latter should consist of sod land mixed with fresh peat and river sand. All this is covered with a film from above and the material is allowed to germinate in a dry and warm room.

2-3 weeks after the sprouts appear, the seedlings are dived into new pots and then grown under optimal conditions, not forgetting about regular watering and mandatory mineral dressing. In open ground, seedlings are planted the next season after the initial planting.

Blueberry cultivation technology in the garden

Unlike its "relative", blueberries are more versatile and are more often cultivated by gardeners. It grows both in swampy areas and in stone tundra, taiga and other forest thickets.

The most preferred varieties for home cultivation are such as:

  • Taiga beauty;
  • Patriot;
  • Blue Ray;
  • Insinskaya and others.

The planting technique in the form of seedlings is not particularly different, only the holes are dug less deep, 15-20 centimeters are enough. Before deepening, the roots of the seedling are placed in cold water for 20-30 minutes, after which they start laying in the ground.

Blueberries grow well in drained soils with high acidity. Organic fertilizers are rarely used, limiting themselves to nutrient and mineral complexes. The technology of growing from seeds does not differ from a similar process with blueberries. For the winter, it is better to cover and insulate the planted bushes, especially in regions where there is not a lot of snow.

Differences in berries during collection, storage and transportation

Between themselves, these two related berries differ not only in appearance and taste, but also in the requirements for storage and collection. Blueberries spoil much faster. Fruits plucked in warm weather are stored at low temperatures (+ 2-7 degrees) in cellars or a refrigerator. The same goes for blueberries, but naturally they keep longer and better.

Blueberries and blueberries react differently and to improper collection or handling. Berries are usually harvested in the midst of their ripeness, not allowing them to overripe, but also trying not to pluck the green fruits. They are transported in special boxes or containers, and preferably in mobile refrigerators to preserve the maximum properties and freshness of the crop.

For the winter, both berries are stored frozen or dried. They are also prepared delicious jams, compotes and others canned preparations... Freezing is carried out in stages - first, the fruits are thoroughly washed, then dried, and only after that they are distributed in plastic containers or bags for storage in the freezer. In this form, it is recommended to keep them for no more than 1 season, otherwise the taste and beneficial features deteriorate markedly.

In the coniferous and mixed forests of the northern part of Russia, there are two berries that are similar in appearance and useful properties - blueberries and blueberries. What is the difference between these cultures and what effect does their use have on the body? There are very specific answers to these and other questions.

What is the difference between blueberries and blueberries in appearance?

To the unsophisticated consumer, the difference between the two cultures seems insignificant, but upon closer inspection, it turns out that:

  1. Blueberries are always larger than blueberries. The selection of blueberries is carried out in the direction of increasing the weight of the fruits, and their diameter in some varieties can reach 20 mm, while blueberries do not go beyond the limits of 0.5-0.7 cm, i.e. the difference in size is more than 2 times.
  2. The color of blueberries can vary from light blue to black-blue, like blueberries, but the difference is that blueberries have a pronounced bluish bloom.
  3. And, finally, you can understand how to distinguish blueberries or blueberries by the appearance of the pulp of the crushed berry. Blueberry juice will instantly turn your fingers into a deep purple color, and blueberries inside are almost colorless and watery.
  4. Some sources claim that blueberries have a pear-shaped oblong shape, but this is not entirely true. They can be as round as blueberries, the difference or lack thereof depends on the characteristics of the particular variety. This misconception is clearly demonstrated by the photo of blueberries and blueberries of the Blue Gold variety.

What is the difference between blueberries and blueberries in terms of properties

In terms of composition, both species represent a whole storehouse of useful substances - vitamins, trace elements, amino acids, pectins, the difference between them is insignificant, respectively, and the therapeutic effect on the body coincides in some parameters.

Composition and properties of blueberries

100 g of the product contains 0.74 g of protein, 14.49 g of carbohydrates and 0.33 g of fat. The calorie content of blueberries is 57 kcal / 100 g. Only 200 g of fresh product covers the body's daily need for vitamin A, therefore it is the increased content of carotenoids that has become the hallmark of blueberries when recommending their use to people with vision problems.

Important! To assimilate most of the carotenoids, blueberries are consumed along with a small amount heavy cream or fatty sour cream.

Blueberries are useful for food poisoning: it is enough to eat half a glass of dried (or sun-dried) berries every 6 hours. The antimicrobial effect of phytoncides contained in blueberries is manifested in the treatment of influenza and ARVI. Fresh fruits or fruit drinks from them give a good effect. Blueberries are a great product for prolonging the youthfulness of the skin, as they contain antioxidants that slow down the action of free radicals. For the same reason, it is recommended for the prevention of cancer.

The high content of manganese in the fruits and the glycoside of myrtillin in blueberry leaves has led to their use in the form of tea with an increased content of sugar in the blood. The combination of blueberry leaf and stevia herb in a ratio of 2 to 1 is especially effective. Tea made from blueberry leaves is also used for weight loss, since it can reduce appetite. The pulp is used in cosmetology as a moisturizing component, and in the treatment of external wounds and abscesses, it helps their early healing.

Attention! The daily intake of fresh blueberries for an adult should not exceed 500 g, for a child - 100 g. Otherwise, an allergic reaction or indigestion is possible. It is not recommended to mix blueberries with other berries (raspberries, strawberries, cloudberries).

Composition and properties of blueberries

This is a record amount of vitamin PP contained in it, which has a positive effect on the health of the nervous system. Important! Combining blueberries with strong coffee or tea can be toxic.

Blueberries contain antioxidants: vitamins A, E and C, which make this berry a means to strengthen the immune system and the use of the product fresh is welcomed in the season of colds. For a long time, blueberries have been used by the peoples of the North and Siberia as an antiscorbutic agent for vitamin deficiency. Rich content of pectin in the composition and low calorie content determines the use of blueberries in diets for diabetics and those who are losing weight.

Having a positive effect on the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract, blueberries can be used for constipation. The consumption of fresh fruits is recommended for people who have been exposed to radiation. In addition, blueberries can neutralize some heavy metal salts, remove waste and toxins from the body. Fresh blueberry juice in a volume of 0.5 liters every day literally magically helps to restore memory functions in people over 60 years old, improves concentration and slows down the aging of nerve cells.

Attention! Eating excessively blueberries - if you exceed the rate of 1 kg per day - can cause severe allergic reactions and prolonged diarrhea. It is not recommended to add blueberries to the diets of young children and nursing mothers due to their high biological activity.
