The missing information is that the stock of item A is about 50 units, and the stock of item B is about 1000 units.

Well, which one is slow-moving? Obviously B!

Why has the picture changed? Is it bad that "only" 50 units of A are being sold a week? (Maybe this is his entire market.) And you are willing to give up product B because it is a slow-moving product?

Most likely, the distributor is not bothered by the sale of 50 units of A per week (as long as his share contribution or the passage in TOC language) is positive. What worries him is that every day he sees shelves (or reports in his program, depending on whether he is in a warehouse or sitting in a cozy office) with a huge stock of B.

So how do you convert a slow-moving item to a hot one?

So-called slow-moving products are self-created because purchases of that product exceed their sales rate. Since we can create a slow-moving product, we can prevent it from happening. Any product can be hot as long as the sales to inventory ratio (also known as inventory turnover) is high for that product.

The question is, why is this simple logic not accepted in most companies? This is due to the fact that in these companies the movement of stocks is not based on pulling, but on pushing to the market. If we push out stocks, we get very high stock levels for some SKUs (relative to the rate of sales) and too low stocks for others.

We can achieve high turnover of all SKUs only if we have a pull distribution system or, in other words, a rapid replenishment system that can respond to fluctuations in demand in very short time horizons. The system should have a built-in automatic blocking mechanism that reduces or stops the purchase of a specific SKU when the demand for it falls. The Theory of Constraints solution helps to align the rate of stock flow throughout the supply chain with the rate of actual demand at the end point of sales.

I agree, this is theory and very good. By the way, did you know that in order for a hypothesis to be called a theory, it has to repeatedly pass specially designed fail tests? This means that there really is nothing more practical than a good theory.
