Pattern of a skirt-sun. DIY sun skirt - 4.4 out of 5 based on 26 votes

In this master class you will find all the information you need to make a skirt pattern with your own hands and learn:
what you need to have to build a skirt pattern;
what measurements will be needed for the "sun" skirt;
how to make a skirt pattern;
what is the best and most rational way to cut the fabric using the "sun" skirt pattern.
A pattern for a skirt is made using:
centimeter tape;
sheet of whatman paper;
ruler and pencil.
You will need scissors, chalk and tailor's pins to cut the material.

It's easy to take measurements

Before you start building a skirt pattern, you need to take measurements. For this model, only two parameters are needed: the waist circumference and the length of the product. If the skirt is with an elastic band (without a belt), then add a few more centimeters to the waist circumference. During the measurement, it is necessary to stand upright, not pulling in the stomach, and not protruding it.
So, the "sun" skirt pattern is made according to the measurements:
From - waist circumference;
Du is the length of the skirt.

How to make a pattern of a skirt with your own hands?

Making a skirt pattern is elementary. First, draw a right angle. From the top of this angle on one of the sides, you need to postpone the radius of the circle, calculating it using the formula: R = From: (2 x Pi), where the number Pi = 3.14.
Draw a portion of a circle of a given radius using a compass. If you don't have such a tool at hand, then use a measuring tape. Align the division on it, equal to the value of the radius calculated by the formula, with the vertex of the right angle and press with your finger. Then move the end of the tape measure from one side of the right angle to the other, making marks. Connect them together. The resulting rounded line will be the thallium line on the skirt pattern.
Next, you need to measure the length of the skirt from the waistline and draw the bottom line of the product according to the same principle as when building the waistline. The pattern for the "sun" skirt is ready. Now you can start cutting the fabric.

How to cut the fabric?

Fold the material for sewing a skirt four times (as a handkerchief is folded). Place the pattern you made on top, aligning its straight sides with the folds of the fabric. Secure the template with tailor's pins or fix it by simply placing a weight on it.
Draw chalk around the waist and bottom lines. Add 1 cm at the top of the seam and at the bottom of the hem, draw rounded lines and cut the skirt along them. The cut of the skirt is ready, now it remains to cut the belt. Draw a rectangle that is From + 2cm for the seams, and another rectangle that is twice the width of the waistband plus 2cm for the seams. The width of the belt can be selected at will. Usually a narrow belt is made in a “sun” skirt, only 2 cm. However, there are models with a very wide belt or without it at all - with an elastic band or with an oblique trim.
If the width of the fabric does not allow for a one-piece version of the skirt, then you can cut it with seams on the sides. To do this, fold the fabric in half and cut out each of the halves separately.

Skirt-sun: easy to sew and nice to wear

For those who have just got carried away with sewing things for themselves or friends, better option than a sun skirt, for a start you will not find. The pattern for the skirt is made quickly, the cut of the product is very simple, the sewing is not complicated. The main thing in sewing, as in any needlework, is accuracy and patience, then the result will surely be excellent!
Many curvy women are sure that a sun skirt is not suitable for them. However, this is not at all the case. If you show a little ingenuity and imagination, then you can, on the contrary, very successfully hide the fullness - it is enough to put the “sun” skirt on a yoke. This style with a low waist will give the figure more slimness, and the soft folds of the lower part of the skirt will mysteriously hide the problem area.
A short sun skirt is very suitable for young girls with slender legs. It will add volume to the hips, making the waist appear even thinner.

This probably explains the popularity of the "sun" skirt, that it is incredibly easy to sew and is indispensable in any woman's wardrobe. In our atelier you can order such a skirt not only in its basic design, but also made in various, more complex, variations. Our employees, when accepting an order for sewing a skirt, will suggest the optimal style for your figure, help you choose the fabric, determine the length, and recommend a suitable finish.
For those who want to master tailoring and sew for themselves and their friends, our specialists will not only offer free patterns for skirts and other products, but also share some of the secrets of their skills.
Many will surely be interested in subscribe to our channel on youtube. It was created especially for beginners and those who want to comprehend the professional secrets of experienced craftsmen.

It is always better to start sewing with the simplest project. The sun skirt is exactly the option that can be advised for beginners. It fits any shape and can be made from almost any fabric. The calculations for the pattern are based on just a few measurements. Even a novice craftswoman will be able to sew a beautiful and fashionable thing with her own hands.

Sun skirts are of 4 types:

  • full sun ( common)
  • ¾ ( three quarters of the sun)
  • half sun ( or 1/2)
  • ¼ ( quarter)

This picture will help you figure it out.

Depending on the length, skirts can be divided into three groups: mini, midi, maxi.

For an average height (about 170 cm):

  • Mini - from 35 cm to 40 cm
  • Midi - from 66 cm to 71 cm
  • Maxi - from 96 cm to 102 cm

In my step by step instructions will be considered by sewing a regular skirt sun ( full sun) mini size ( or midi if for a girl).

Sun Skirt Pattern

To build a pattern for such a skirt, you need only two measurements: the waist circumference and the length of the product. In fact, you need to carve out a circle from the fabric, which will contain another circle - the belt. The main task is to correctly calculate their radii. The pattern (or rather half of it) will be built on paper folded in half.

Measure around your waist and add at least 1.5 cm to it for a free fit. Often, such an allowance is made already during the measurement, and the waist circumference is recorded with it. Thus, we get the size FROM(waist circumference).

Next, we recall the geometry course and make the necessary calculations. The circumference is equal to the product of the number π and two radii ( c = 2R x 3.14). Therefore, in order to calculate the radius of the circle, it is necessary to make the following calculations: divide the circumference (waist circumference) by 2 π (2 × 3.14 = 6.28), i.e.:

Set aside segments AA1 and AA2 equal to the calculated radius.

We build an angle of 90 degrees, the top of this angle is point A. It is necessary to postpone along the segment on the sides of the angle equal to the radius of the circle (belt).

We use a ruler as a compass (if in doubt about its accuracy, take a real one) and draw a dotted circle line with the same radius on the pattern canvas.

The next measurement is the length of the skirt itself (DU)... We put aside the segments A1H1 and A2H2 on the sides of the corner. Then we build a new circle. It is better to set its radius from point A (after all, inaccuracies in the construction of the first circle will also be reflected on the lower edge). The radius of this circle will be equal to the sum of the segments AA1 and A1H1.

Your builds gave half of the front pattern. We cut it out, getting a pattern of half of the skirt by folding the paper. Allowances can be marked in advance for the top and bottom edges, or they can be applied to the fabric when cutting.

At this stage, it is very useful to attach a paper pattern to the figure and correct possible flaws (and a beginner master should practice by cutting out the entire skirt on paper).

Additionally, we cut out a rectangle that will become a belt. Its length will be equal to the waist circumference + seam allowances, and the width should be twice the desired width + seam allowances.

Open Skirts-Sun

Bend the fabric in half across the warp threads. Cutting should be by placing a pattern with a diameter on the fold line and securing with pins. If you did not create hem and waist allowances on the pattern, you can apply them directly to the fabric, setting aside the desired distance from the paper.

The length of the allowances will depend on the type of seam selected for processing. It is better to make the allowances a little larger so that you can correct the final details in case of inaccurate measurements.

Now you should cut out the skirt, grabbing the entire fabric with scissors. As a result, you will get the required circle. We cut it along the fold line of the fabric on one side: a zipper will be sewn in this place.

The next step in building a pattern is trying it on. A mannequin will help you a lot. Place the future skirt on it and let it hang down. Since the skirt is cut obliquely, the warp and weft of the fabric may warp slightly.

The skirt should hang down

After the skirt hangs down, if necessary, trim the bottom line of the skirt with sharp scissors, attaching a paper pattern to it.

Sewing a skirt-sun

It's better to start work with sewing a belt.

Connect the belt piece and lining and fold the allowances on the two long sides of the belt to the wrong side, securing the folds with an iron. Fold the belt along the right side inward and secure the fold with pins.

Sew the edges on both sides with a typewriter, then turn the belt out to the right side.

Hem the bottom of the skirt using a seam that matches your fabric. You can, for example, overlock the hem of the skirt or fold the fabric twice.

There is nothing easier than sewing a sun skirt with your own hands, for this you do not even need complicated patterns. And for a girl, such a new thing can be made even without a side seam. A light and graceful sun skirt can be ready in 2-3 hours if there is a suitable piece of fabric. You can wear it for a celebration or for a walk on a summer evening. "Sun" cut skirts are also used as the lower part of the dress, as an element of folk and carnival costumes.

How to cut a sun skirt?

To make a renewal, you need a fabric that easily forms soft folds. For the summer version, thin lightweight fabrics are suitable, and for the autumn-winter wardrobe it is better to take thin wool or knitted materials. In addition, you will need:

  • tailor's meter;
  • scissors;
  • sewing machine;
  • underwear or wide elastic band, button, zipper.

Before you sew a sun skirt, you need to draw its pattern. You can make it on fabric or paper. If you plan to sew a floor-long skirt, then you will have to cut it in parts. A regular pattern on the fabric will complicate the work, since parts of it will have to be combined. The best assistant in this case will be a paper pattern-template ¼ part of the skirt.

Take 2 measurements: waist circumference (OT) and product length (CI). For a sun skirt with an elastic band, instead of OT, you need to take a measurement of the hip girth (OB). The sun skirt pattern is a circle, in the center of which there is a cutout for sewing an elastic band or belt along the waist line. With a long skirt, even a fabric width of 150 cm may not be enough, so it will have to be cut from 2 or 4 pieces. A skirt for a girl or a short one can be cut out entirely, without a side seam, if the sum of 1/6 OT and DI does not exceed half the width and length of the fabric cut.

To complete the ¼ pattern of the sun skirt, you need to mark point 0 in the upper left corner of the sheet of paper and draw 2 perpendicular lines from it (to the right and down). Set aside horizontally from point 0 a distance equal to 1/6 of the OT measurement (or 1/6 OB, if you sew a sun skirt with an elastic band) and put point A. From it to the right, measure the distance equal to DI and designate this point A1.

Do the same on a vertical line. Designate points B (at a distance of 1/6 FROM) and B 1, postponing CI. Connect points A and B with an arc. To make the arc even, you can take a small piece of strong thread and a pencil. Pressing the end of the thread at point 0 with your left hand, with your right hand grab the pencil and the stretched thread at mark A. Without loosening the thread tension, draw a line to point B. The arc will turn out to be ideal.

You can draw an arc A 1 B 1 in the same way if the length of the skirt is small. With a large distance to the bottom, you can postpone the DI several times from the points on the drawn arc AB (waist cut) and connect the resulting marks to each other with smooth lines. Cut out pattern ¼ along lines BB 1, AA 1 and arched top and bottom lines. Rice. 2.

Using this pattern, you can cut out skirts of the "half sun", "sun" style, gypsy (double "sun"), tiered skirt.

When using a fabric in a cage or with another geometric pattern, the template must be placed on it so that the parts of the pattern on the joining parts coincide. If you are using a plain fabric, you can fold it in half or four and align the straight lines of the pattern with the folds and edges. ...

How to sew a cut-out sun skirt?

Before you sew a sun skirt from separate segments of the circle, you need to combine parts of the pattern and chop off the details with pins or bast. Stitch them with a straight line at a distance of 1 cm from the edge, process and iron the seams. For a skirt with a zipper and a wide belt on one of the seams, you need to leave room for a 15-20 cm long zipper. The lock can be located at the back or side.

Bast the closed zipper to the fabric so that the ironed folds along the edges of the fastener freely come together over the "snake". Sew the seams on the machine on the front side of the product at a distance of 0.5 cm from the fold, moving the lock along the "snake" so that it does not interfere. At the bottom of the fastener, make a transverse stitching to secure the ends of the zipper.

The belt should be a few centimeters longer than the OT measurement in order to be able to make a strap with a loop for a button or sew on hidden hooks. The width of the fabric strip for the belt is 2 times the width of the belt plus 2 cm of the seam allowance. Fold the pattern of the belt in half lengthwise, stitch its straight edge from the inside out. Decorate the strap by stitching the vertical edge and horizontal cuts a few centimeters from it. Turn the part over the face and iron the top fold of the fabric, the straight edge seam and the strap.

Baste the belt, aligning the straight edge with one side of the sewn-in fastener and positioning the piece face to face with the skirt. Adjust the strap to the other side of the fastener so that the sewn part of it fits snugly against the open zipper. If necessary, rip up the strap seam. Top off the seam between the waistband and skirt.

Bend the free edge of the belt along the entire length from the inside of the skirt panel and baste it so that the machine line can pass exactly along the seam on the front side. It is better to lay this line from the face of the product, controlling its entry into the seam.

For sewing a skirt with an elastic band with your own hands, you can also use a sewing belt. Having cut out a strip equal to OB, its ends need to be sewn together to get a ring. Fold the fabric in half and sew as above. On the seamy side of the belt, make a hole for the elastic and insert it into the belt. When using a wide rubber band as a belt, sweep it stretched to the fabric and stitch the seam. You can also simply fold over the edge of the cutout, stitch it in at a distance of 1.5 cm from the top and thread the elastic into the resulting drawstring.

The skirt sun is sewn with your own hands. It remains only to hem the bottom of the product and iron the new thing well. Indeed, in fact, there was nothing very complicated in how to sew a skirt for the sun. This can be done both for beginners, and for a loving mother who does not possess special skills in sewing clothes for her daughter, and for the daughter herself, who creates clothes for her beloved doll.

For any girl, having skirts in her wardrobe means being elegant and drawing attention to herself with a beautiful gait. But what if not every young lady is satisfied with the outfits that have various fashion boutiques in their assortment? Of course, in this case, you should turn to the immortal classics and sew your own outfit on your own.

What could be easier than using fabric, thread and scissors to make clothes to your liking? For example, almost every woman knows how to cut a “sun” or a skirt. This is one of the simplest models and at the same time the most popular, which came from the 60s of the last century. The trend still remains relevant.

Why does every girl need a "sun" skirt?

First of all, because a skirt of this style suits absolutely everyone, even girls with a non-standard figure and those who do not like to wear such an outfit at all. She is a free, maximally flared skirt that sits at the waist or hips. Even the person who is far from sewing clothes knows how to cut the “sun” (skirt), although it may seem that this is not so.

Everyone remembers how in childhood you were taught to cut snowflakes out of paper? It is necessary to fold the leaf in four, carefully cut out the middle and trim the edges to end up with a circle. To sew a “sun” skirt with your own hands, you will need to do exactly the same manipulations, only with the fabric.

Selection of material and taking measurements

First of all, you should decide for which season you need such a skirt. And, based on this, choose a fabric. For summer, an option from a chiffon fabric of bright colors is suitable, for an autumn or winter season, you can choose a fabric made of natural wool, thick cotton or trouser fabric. The main condition when choosing a material: it should not stretch in any direction. Otherwise, by weight, you will then have to equalize the edges so that the skirt does not look crooked.

The next criterion that you need to decide on is how much fabric is needed to get a skirt of the desired length. For example, from a square piece with a side of 1.5 meters, you will get a short, 45 centimeters long, "sun" skirt for a girl. A paper pattern is not required, which makes the whole process very simple. The only drawback of the "sun" is a very high consumption of fabric. That is, to sew a 1 meter long skirt, you need at least 2.5 m of material. It should not be forgotten that the fabric folds into four folds when cut!

Before you cut out the "sun", the skirt, you should take measurements. Although it is advisable to know your sizes before purchasing the fabric, in order to buy a large enough piece. You need to measure your waist, hips and length. The long skirt "sun" will excellent option for the summer period, the shorter one is good for the office. The middle model can make a school skirt "sun" for a girl. The pattern, which is usually cut out of paper with preliminary calculations, we repeat, is not required - no blanks cut from wallpaper or oilcloth, everything is extremely simple!

Work equipment

Sewing will take more time only if there is no sewing machine at home and you need to sweep everything by hand. First, you need to prepare all the necessary materials:

  • the cloth;
  • scissors;
  • centimeter tape;
  • pins / needles;
  • threads;
  • a crayon or bar of soap;
  • elastic for the belt.

Before cutting out a single-seam "sun" skirt at home, it is better to free up more space in advance on some flat surface. For a short model, a fold-out table is quite suitable. A long skirt will probably take up the entire floor of the room.

Cut skirt

The process consists of the following steps:

  1. Fold the fabric in four. In order to ultimately make the skirt even, you need to stab the fabric with needles along the edges.
  2. Next, you need to make a notch - cut out a small circle in the middle, which will be equal to the circumference of the hips. This is done as follows. Divide the volume of the hips by 6. Measure the resulting length with a centimeter from the corner (the one that is the middle of the entire fabric folded in four) in several places to make a quarter of the circle. First, several points are marked on the fabric with chalk, and then they are connected into a solid line.
  3. From the resulting recess, measure the length of the skirt, leaving 2 centimeters in reserve for further processing of the bottom. In the same way, first we measure out several points at a short distance from each other. Then we connect everything in one line with the help of a crayon.
  4. Along the resulting lines, cut out a pattern from the fabric. Ultimately, you get a circle with a hole in the middle, a kind of "donut".
  5. From the remaining fabric, cut out a belt 10-12 centimeters wide (depending on the width of the elastic) and a length equal to the waist + 10 cm in reserve. Or we buy a stretching tape, on which we will subsequently put a skirt without a belt.

The easiest way to sew a “sun” skirt with your own hands is in this way, since it is seamless. At the same time, special accuracy is not required here. To save fabric, you can sew a "sun" skirt from two parts. But we will lose much more time. Indeed, in this case, the calculation of the "sun" skirt will take quite a long time.

Sew a skirt

  1. Sweep the top to the waist for a slight gather.
  2. If the skirt is made with a belt, then fold it along and stitch it beforehand.
  3. Sew the resulting belt to the "sun".
  4. In the resulting belt, use a pin to thread an elastic band with a length equal to the volume of the waist.
  5. We connect the edges of the elastic. We do the same with the edges of the belt.
  6. You can fit the skirt with a simple wide elastic band. To do this, we carry out point 1, after which we immediately sew an elastic band to the side, bypassing steps 2-5.
  7. You can process the hem of the skirt in different ways. For example, using an overlock. If it is not there, you can use a typewriter and process the edges with a small or large zigzag, depending on the type of fabric.
  8. Excess fabric should be cut from the inside out. So that it does not cause discomfort, the joint of the belt and skirt can be processed with a small zigzag or using an overlock.

After completing all these simple manipulations, we will get a ready-made outfit. As you can see, it is very easy to sew a “sun” skirt with your own hands without any design problems.

Bottom processing options

Not all fabrics will fit just a finished skirt hem. For example, it looks pretty rough on white material. Therefore, the bottom can be folded and smoothed with a thin adhesive tape, 2 centimeters wide. It should be purchased at any sewing accessory store. Another option is to fold the bottom three times and process the hem. It will take longer. But in the end, the skirt will look neat.

With what to wear a skirt "sun"?

It all depends on what fabric the outfit is made of. The long skirt "sun" looks great with tight T-shirts and tops in the summer. The knee-length check wool outfit is perfect for tight-fitting turtlenecks, and a wide belt that hides the elastic will complement this beautiful look. More "formal" flared skirts made of thick gray fabric look perfect with shirts of the most daring colors. And, of course, what a true lady does not wear such an outfit with heels. Now you know how to cut the "sun". The skirt can be sewn very easily by yourself. Go for it!

An elegant sun skirt is a must-have in your wardrobe. Tightly fitting at the waist, the skirt flares at the bottom, falling down in soft, wide folds. This model is the perfect combo partner for a wide range of looks, from feminine to sporty elegance. One of the options shown in the photo is a combination of a bright sun skirt and a leather jacket in a biker style. Experiment, create fashionable bold combinations, and we will tell you how easy it is to sew such a sun skirt.

Sewing a sun skirt is very simple, and even beginners in sewing can easily cope with it. The design of the sun skirt is a ring that is formed by two circles drawn from one point.

Skirt pattern sun

To build a pattern, take 2 measurements:

Waist circumference 72 cm

Skirt length 75cm

Let's calculate 2 radii. The first radius R1 = Waist circumference / 6.28 = 72 / 6.28 = 11.5 cm, the second radius R2 = R1 + Product length = 11.5 + 75 = 86.5 cm.

In order to draw the correct circle of a given radius, use a simple pencil and flexible measuring tape. Press the centimeter tape with the zero mark at point A, press the pencil vertically to the centimeter at the desired mark. Draw two circles as shown in fig. 1.

IMPORTANT! Check the length of the first semicircle: A1A2 = 1/2 waist. Since the cut is made obliquely, after cutting the tackle cut, pull it back by 2 cm (an additional increase in the freedom of fitting is not required).

Belt: Belt length = Length of the tackle cut in finished form + increase, belt width 8 cm (4 cm in finished form).

IMPORTANT! At this stage, to prevent the skirt from stretching during wear, moisten the skirt with a spray bottle and secure it to the mannequin. Once dry, place the mannequin on a table and trim the hem, measuring the same distance from the table top to the bottom of the skirt.

Fold over the hem allowance and sew it by hand with blind stitches.

Your skirt is ready. Create unique looks and be happy! You will find even more new ideas on the website of the Anastasia Korfiati Sewing School.
